Department
of Home Science and Cosmetology of PCM SD College for Women, Jalandhar in
collaboration with Blood Association, Jalandhar Branch organized a lecture on
Care, Control, Cure and Prevention of Thalassemia. Shri Madan Chawla,
Internationally Certified Thalassemia Care Specialist and President GIFT
(Globally Integrated Foundation for Thalassemia) were the Guest Speaker. Thalassemia is a rare genetic blood disorder
that affects the body’s ability to produce hemoglobin. The disorder results in
large number of red cells being destroyed leading to anemia. As a result, these
patients require regular blood transfusions after every 15 days or 1 month. He urged
the students to donate blood regularly so that these patients can get their
blood transfusions done. He laid stress on the prevention of Thalassemia as
this disease cannot be cured. He said that everyone should get HbA2 test done
for Thalassemia so that precautions can be taken if the tests are found positive.
He said that the youth, especially girls, can help in eradicating this disease
by creating awareness among their family, friends and community.
